Modification of your password: attention to side effects

The context

It is recommended that you change your password on a regular basis, but sometimes this has unfortunate consequences, because the old password continues to be active on certain devices.

The GASPAR password can be modified at gaspar.epfl.ch. (FAQ: http://help-gaspar.epfl.ch/page-108369-en.html#faq-705563)

If you forget your password, contact the manager of your unit if you are an employee. If you are a student, contact the Student Services Office (BP 1229), Poseidon (MA A0 388), or the Service Desk (MA A0 388). Do not forget to bring along your CAMIPRO card.

If GASPAR-Active Directory (AD) synchronization is active (this is the default option and cannot be changed for students), changing your GASPAR password will automatically change your Active Directory password as well (Windows).

To make sure that your old password is deactivated when reboot your computer after having entered a new password, make sure that it is connected the schools network via a cable. Wait a few minutes before you reboot and sign in with your new password.

What are the identified risks?

Problems arise when applications use locally stored passwords on your computer or smartphone. When a user decides to change his GASPAR or AD password he/she must delete or modify the password locally on all devices following the change.

Also be careful with applications that have stored the password for synchronization.

For example,

Try to think of all the computers and smartphones on which your old password could be stored that repeatedly try to access a mailbox, mount a file system, or use a printer.
